“Elections Have Consequences”   [Ed Whelan]

That same Washington Post editorial reiterates Senator Graham’s trite observation that “elections have consequences.”  Of course they do.  That’s why President Obama, not John McCain, made the nomination to replace Justice Souter, and that’s why it’s been clear from the outset that Judge Sotomayor is a virtual shoo-in to be confirmed.

But the observation that “elections have consequences” provides no reason for Republican senators—who, of course, were elected too—to fail to carry out their responsibilities and to roll over and play dead.  Republican senators who don’t understand that may discover that the next elections they face have unwelcome consequences for their political careers.
